Interested in Fashion School? Exploring Careers in Image Consulting, Personal Styling, and Personal Shopping

Many people interested in fashion eventually realize they are not necessarily looking to become fashion designers or need to go to fashion school. Instead, they are often drawn to careers that involve:

  • personal style,
  • client transformation,
  • communication,
  • wardrobe strategy,
  • shopping,
  • personal branding,
  • and helping people improve how they present themselves professionally and personally.

This is where careers such as image consulting, personal styling, personal shopping, and color analysis have continued to grow globally over the last two decades.

The Sterling Style Academy, founded in New York in 2005, was developed to provide professional training for aspiring image consultants, personal stylists, personal shoppers, and color analysts seeking career-focused education within the fashion and image industries.

Fashion School vs. Image Consultant Training

Traditional fashion schools often focus heavily on:

  • fashion design,
  • garment construction,
  • textile development,
  • merchandising,
  • or fashion production.

Image consultant and personal stylist training focuses on a different area of the industry:

  • working directly with clients,
  • wardrobe styling,
  • personal branding,
  • color analysis,
  • communication,
  • executive presence,
  • personal shopping,
  • and visual identity development.

Many students pursuing image consulting education are interested in helping clients improve confidence, presentation, communication, and professional image through style strategy and consultation.

What Does an Image Consultant Do?

An image consultant helps clients refine and strengthen their visual presentation through services such as:

  • wardrobe analysis,
  • color analysis,
  • body analysis,
  • personal shopping,
  • personal branding,
  • professional image development,
  • and executive presence consulting.

Image consultants may work with:

  • executives,
  • entrepreneurs,
  • professionals,
  • public-facing individuals,
  • media personalities,
  • or clients experiencing personal or career transitions.

Careers in Personal Styling and Personal Shopping

Personal stylists and personal shoppers often help clients:

  • build cohesive wardrobes,
  • shop strategically,
  • improve fit and proportion,
  • develop signature style,
  • and align their wardrobe with their lifestyle and goals.

As digital media and personal branding continue to evolve, many stylists now also work within:

  • content creation,
  • personal branding,
  • online consulting,
  • fashion entrepreneurship,
  • and social media-related industries.

Why Many Students Pursue Image Consulting as a Career

Students interested in image consulting and personal styling often come from backgrounds such as:

  • fashion,
  • beauty,
  • communications,
  • retail,
  • business,
  • hospitality,
  • education,
  • media,
  • and entrepreneurship.

Many are seeking careers that combine:

  • creativity,
  • communication,
  • strategy,
  • client interaction,
  • and personal transformation.

Others are interested in developing independent consulting businesses or expanding existing businesses through styling and branding services.

Michelle T. Sterling on Fashion School vs. Image Consultant Training

“Over the last 20 years, I’ve worked with many students who previously attended fashion schools, fashion universities, or short styling programs before enrolling at Sterling Style Academy. In my personal experience — and based on feedback from many graduates — traditional fashion education often does not go deeply enough into the specific skills required to become a highly effective image consultant or personal stylist.

Fashion schools can be excellent for areas such as fashion design, fashion marketing, merchandising, or broader fashion industry education. However, becoming a successful personal stylist or image consultant requires a very different type of training focused specifically on client transformation, wardrobe strategy, color analysis, communication, consultation methodology, personal branding, and real-world client interaction.

Even in my own experience taking courses through institutions such as FIT and London College of Fashion, I often felt the education was more introductory or theoretical than professionally immersive for someone intending to work directly with clients in the image consulting industry.

FIT is one of the few fashion schools that appears to have incorporated instruction from professionals actively working within the image consulting field, which makes a difference. However, many programs in the market today — particularly short certifications not built by long-term practicing image consultants or personal stylists — often lack the depth necessary to fully prepare students for client work.

One of the biggest issues in today’s industry is that many people begin calling themselves personal stylists without having received substantial education specifically focused on styling, consultation, image development, or client strategy. In many cases, this creates confusion for consumers because having a fashion background, personal style or social media visibility is not the same as understanding how to professionally guide clients through transformation.

If your goal is specifically to become a personal stylist or image consultant, it is important to study under professionals who have spent years actively working in and developing methodology within the industry itself — not simply within fashion education generally.

That distinction matters tremendously when it comes to developing the confidence, technical knowledge, communication skills, and client strategy necessary to build a long-term career in image consulting and personal styling.” — Michelle T. Sterling
