There are no hard and fast rules for style, but it’s a different story when it comes to wearing color. Whatever your complexion, some colors will make you look sickly while others will bring your skin to life. Yes, it’s easy to cling to boring black, but why not create a fashion rainbow just for you that will make dressing to impress easy?
Get Under Your Skin
Knowing your skin and understanding its undertones is the first step. There are simple tests such as looking at the color of your veins, your eyes, your hair. See if the undertone is warm (yellow & peach) or cool (pink & red). The “Daily Mail” suggests holding a cream (warm) and then a white (cool) sheet up to your face; whichever makes your eyes glow determines your coloring.
Golden Girls Wear the Sun on Their Sleeves
If your skin tone and coloring is fair, bright and sun-kissed, you can relate to celebrities such as Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz and Nicole Kidman. You have blond, copper or red hair, with peachy skin that tans easily. How to dress? Glow in muted shades such as taupe, ivory and khaki, but wear turquoise and red and you’re on fire. For day to day color injection, choose subdued shades of rose, jade, aubergine, chocolate and navy.

Porcelain, ivory, pale, white … if you would use these words to describe your skin tone, then you are known in the color analysis industry as “summer.” You have a delicate and cool complexion and should celebrate it. “If you are cool and light it’s best to wear pastel colors like light pinks, light blues, mints and lavender,” suggests Michelle T. Glow For It
Like the season you are named after, take your cue from the autumn landscape. Honey, caramel and earthy are how people would describe your warm coloring. You’re in good company — Zoe Saldana, Eva Mendes and Angelina Jolie all share your delicious and versatile tones. The best colors for you to wear are nudes, crisp white, yellows and coppers, which will harmonize your hue. You are the one skin tone that black genuinely compliments.
Ice Queens Pop in Bright Colors
If you find a kindred skin tone in the likes of Naomi Campbell, Alek Wek and Jennifer Hudson, you are “winter.” With your cool, crisp and dark coloring you can be very daring in your dressing style. Don’t be afraid to switch things up every now and then to show off your style savvy. “It’s fine to break the rules as long as you first know if your skin is warm or cool,” says Sterling. “Warm skin should wear gold accessories and cool skin should wear silver accessories near the face if you’re not wearing the appropriate colors on your body.”
