Yet behind every good curl day, we know there is intention. There is patience. And — most importantly — the curly hair products.

Curls are energetic, vivacious, unapologetically adventurous — but so is the regimen and practice by which we care for them. No two curls are exactly alike, and so, no two curls must be cared for alike. Once you learn the ways in which you might style and care for voluptuous ringlets or soft, beachy waves, you find the once-headache-producing-hassle is really nothing but liberated elation.

Know Your Curl Type

No. 1 rule for amazing curls: Work with what you’ve got. There are generally three different curl types (wavy, curly, coily), each with its own unique texture and hydration requirements to keep in mind.

Wavy hair (Type 2A–2C) can be fine and prone to getting limp with heavy products.

Curly hair (Type 3A–3C) is thirsty and needs a more substantial conditioner and curl-defining cream to keep frizz at bay.

Coily hair (4A–4C) loves intense moisture, deep conditioning, and gentle detangling.

Once you identify your hair type, it’s easy to find products to enhance what you’ve got, rather than fighting the system.

Cleanse Without Stripping

Our curls need all of the moisture they can get — and traditional shampoos strip them of it. For this reason, sulfate-free shampoos are important. Recommend a cleanser that gets the product buildup off the scalp but won’t leave it feeling tight or with dry skin.

If they feel like their hair is thirsty, recommend they alternate to a cleanser or co-wash. Let them know  —  it’s a minor adjustment that can make a major change in softness and improvement with the level of hydration for their curls.

Condition Like You Mean It

Curly hair and conditioner go together hand in (well-moisturized) hand. After shampooing, use a superhydrating formula that lays down the cuticle for a smoother surface and helps your curls retain moisture.

Work from mid-length to ends, and use your hands or a wide-tooth comb, which causes less damage than brushes. Let the conditioner sit for a few minutes so it has time to sink in.

And if your curls often feel frizzy come the afternoon, try using a leave-in conditioner to help keep things under control and retain moisture all day long.

Style with Intention

This is where the magic happens. Products are key, and so is the order and timing of their application.

Apply your product(s) to your hair while it’s still damp. Break out the curl cream or gel, and scrunch, scrunch, scrunch in an upward fashion to get the good definition. Don’t brush. Shape curls with your fingers.

If you’re going to use heat, always use a diffuser and use cold air/low air. This isn’t about getting it dry. It’s all about keeping that curl pattern.

Once your curls are dry (no touchy, please, while they set), you can sort of lift them up if you’re feeling too flat.

Master the Refresh

You will rarely get a great hair day on the day you wash. With this method, just refresh and go the following morning.

Either spray with some water or a curl reviver. Then scrunch to activate the products from yesterday. Rub a few drops of oil in your palm and smooth down any frizz.

That’s it! You saved your hair from a complete redo, and your curls are more defined and alive.

Protect While You Sleep

Sleep produces all that hard work, but then it’s all useless when your curls rub against a harsh surface. Don’t work up a sweat; we can avoid it. Utilize a silk or satin pillowcase to save moisture and reduce that friction.

You can also “pineapple” your curls, that is to say, don’t stretch out the curls. This creates tension on the curl. This is different for everyone. Use a silk scarf, and you can wrap that over your curls.

Hydrate from the Inside

Healthy hair starts on the inside. Adequate hydration and a diet full of great-for-you foods equals stronger, more beautiful hair, and a healthy scalp.

Omega-3 fatty acids, biotin, vitamins A and E… they all do wonders for shine and elasticity. It’s like the internal conditioner your hair (especially curly hair!) relies on to keep those curls poppin’ and bouncin’.

Less is More

It’s tempting to load up on every curl product on the shelf, but more isn’t always better. Too many layers can weigh down your hair or cause buildup.

Focus on a simple, consistent routine: a gentle cleanser, a rich conditioner, and one or two styling products that really work for your texture. Curls respond best to balance — moisture, definition, and care.

Embrace the Imperfections

Some days they form perfect spirals. Other days, they do their own thing. That’s part of their charm. Curls are subtle, playful. They are meant to be in motion, to be touched, to make you wonder.

Instead of trying to tame your hair, embrace it. Feel the texture of each curl. Know that every strand has a story — one that’s wild, graceful, and all its own.

The Beauty of Confidence

Ultimately, the very best thing that you can wear with your curls is your confidence. Confidence radiates when your hair feels good. It doesn’t make you seem vain — it makes you seem YOU. Whether you are walking into a boardroom, a bar, a barn, or a bookstore, your voluminous waves shout to the world that you are a brave, imaginative, and beautiful woman who is doing things your own way.

Learning and discovering what your hair particularly loves used to be seen as a time-consuming process, but now the ultimate form of self-care and is a time investment that will serve you back in the form of gorgeousness, vibrancy, and lucidity.

In the end, good hair is not actually about making sure that everything is perfect. It is all about making sure that it is all in balance. With the proper hair products for curly hair, proper care, and some great old-fashioned patience, what you have got is something that is going to be sure to be striking — your beautiful and bouncy curls.

There’s just something so ebullient, so vivacious about curls.
