Style is about the journey not about the destination. Every individual has their own unique personal style. Most of the time our style is influenced by our peers and our environment. So what do you do when you’re spending time in a different country with a different culture? How do you embrace your own personal style and adapt?
As an American image consultant, trying to find and like wearing modest clothing in Dubai is a challenge especially during Ramadan. Knowing what to wear while being true to my style yet respecting the culture is not easy. These are the same hurdles you would face as an image consultant as well when advising clients.
So how do you get around these obstacles? You pick style components for your clients according to their unique personal style and then alter the look to fit the occasion, the environment, and the values of the individuals you’ll be spending time with. That’s how we fit in and manage the perception that we project.
During Ramadan nights looking good is only half the battle. Feel comfortable and confident in your #outfit is the other half of the battle when you’re wear something that isn’t innately your #style
What are the key components to finding your innate style?
1) Wear colors that make you happy. All colors have psychological effects to them. Choose a color that represents you from the inside out.
2) Accessorize with things you love – from classic to statement pieces, your accessories dress up an outfit.
3) Choose an outfit that makes an understated statement. Even if the silhouette of the outfit is not one that you would normally wear, choose a color and fabric that makes you feel good.
The thing about clothing is that you can always alter a silhouette by taking it to a tailor. After Ramadan, I’m inclined to make this dress a middy and add some semi precious stone buttons toward the bust area. These minor adjustments would make me want to wear this dress again and make it my own unique design.
By following these three steps, what seems uncomfortable will become slightly more comfortable to you because after all style should be an expression of who you are and how you’d like to be perceived. Grace and elegance are derived from composure then exemplified through the clothing you wear. Allow your clothing to let your spirit shine.⚜
