I highly recommend staying in the city center to avoid spending a lot on transportation. Rome is best explored on foot, and staying centrally allows you to walk to most major attractions within a 2-mile radius. This not only saves money but also gives you a more authentic feel of the city.

I had a frustrating experience with taxis in Rome. A ride that was supposed to cost between €15-€20 ended up being €40. The Uber app doesn’t offer UberX, so your options are limited to Uber Black (luxury cars) or regular taxis, which can be old and unreliable. If you try to complain about the taxi overcharging you, you will not get a response. Also, navigating Uber pickups at the airport can be confusing, as the designated area is located downstairs in a parking lot underneath the metro station – the signs are not clear.

Avoid Metro Pickpockets

While the metro is a convenient way to get around, it’s notorious for pickpockets. Be extra vigilant if you decide to use it, and always keep an eye on your belongings.

Unfortunately, tourists, especially Americans, are often targeted for overcharging. Always double-check your bills in restaurants and confirm the prices before ordering. I had several experiences where the bill was higher than the menu prices like at Gran Caffe Maggiore, including unexpected service charges and tips added to a terrible tasting cappuccino without my consent at Largo Corrado Ricci Roma because he saw I was using ApplePay.

Choose Accommodation Wisely in Rome

I stayed in central Rome and found it very convenient. However, my last night was in the EUR district, which was supposed to be “more modern” and quite far from the city center. The additional travel costs (50 euros by Uber from the city center) and inconvenience of staying outside the city center made it less enjoyable. If you prefer a more local experience, Airbnb might be a better option.

Enjoy Authentic Experiences

For dining, I recommend exploring local spots like GiaRoma1886 near the Trevi Fountain and Zuma, which offers a fantastic terrace view. However, always be cautious about overcharging in tourist areas.

Shopping Tips in Rome

While I didn’t do much shopping this trip, remember that you can receive a 12% tax refund for tax-free shopping. Do take advantage of this if you plan to shop. Via del Curso and Via Condotti are the best places to take advantage of tax free savings and shop designer brands, respectively.

• Beware of Taxi Scams: Always verify your fare before starting your ride. If possible, use Uber Black vs. the taxi option in Uber to avoid unexpected charges. Uber is expensive in Rome; more than other cities in Europe. In the city center just to go one mile, it can cost 15 – 25 euros depending on the time of day / traffic. Peak hours are in the morning until 10am, then during lunch hour from 11:30 am – 1:30pm and then again starting at 3:45pm – 8:30pm. Expect to pay more at these hours which is similar to taking Uber in NYC.
• Use a Physical Map: Google Maps can sometimes be unreliable. A physical map can be a lifesaver when navigating the city.
• Avoid Peak Tourist Seasons: September and October are particularly busy with American tourists. If you can, plan your trip during a less crowded time to enjoy a more relaxed experience.
• Dining Etiquette: Be cautious of hidden charges at restaurants. Always ask for the price upfront and check your bill carefully.
• Use Public Transport Wisely: The metro is convenient but can be risky for pickpocketing. Use it cautiously or opt for walking whenever possible.

Ti consiglio di soggiornare nel centro della città per risparmiare sui costi di trasporto. Non raccomando l’uso della metro a Roma perché potresti essere derubato. Inoltre, i Romani tendono a sfruttare gli americani, ad esempio con prezzi gonfiati nei ristoranti o tassisti che ti fanno fare giri inutili per aumentare il costo della corsa, anche se prenoti tramite l’app Uber. Nota che Uber non offre UberX a Roma, quindi puoi scegliere solo tra taxi o Uber Black. Quest’ultimo tende a essere una Mercedes o un’auto di lusso, mentre il taxi è bianco, vecchio e va a tassametro.

Problemi con i Taxi a Roma

Ho avuto una pessima esperienza usando il taxi a Roma. Dovevo pagare tra i 15 e i 20 euro, ma alla fine della corsa il tassametro segnava 30 euro. Quando ho controllato il mio conto, mi hanno addebitato 40 euro. Ho provato a lamentarmi con la compagnia di taxi, ma non ho mai ricevuto risposta. Quindi, se non ti dispiace essere truffato durante le vacanze, queste cose non ti daranno fastidio.

All’Aeroporto di Roma

Uscire dall’aeroporto di Roma e trovare il punto di prelievo di Uber non è facile. È situato nel parcheggio sotterraneo vicino alla stazione della metro. Segui i cartelli per il prelievo di Uber, anche se potrebbero essere poco chiari. Chiedi informazioni se necessario.

Periodi di Alta Stagione a Roma

Settembre e ottobre sono periodi molto affollati per i turisti americani, e tutti a Roma sembrano saperlo. Questo è anche un momento in cui gli americani sono spesso presi di mira da vari truffatori, con sovrapprezzi che possono arrivare al 20-30%. Ad esempio, Google Maps non funzionava bene nonostante avessi il roaming globale con T-Mobile, inviandomi spesso fuori strada. È meglio usare una mappa cartacea e pianificare le tue destinazioni in anticipo.

Tour Consigliati a Roma

Se non hai pianificato in anticipo, ti consiglio di fare un tour hop-on hop-off per 25 euro per orientarti. Tuttavia, potresti essere stanco dal viaggio e non riuscire a concentrare. In alternativa, potresti fare un tour in golf cart che costa circa 100 dollari e può essere prenotato tramite l’app Viator.

Dove Soggiornare a Roma

Settembre e ottobre sono periodi molto costosi per visitare Roma. Se preferisci usare Airbnb potrebbe essere un’opzione migliore, ma se opti per un hotel, scegli il centro di Roma. Ho alloggiato in un hotel centrale e potevo raggiungere a piedi molte delle principali attrazioni turistiche. Tuttavia, il mio hotel non era disponibile per l’ultima notte, quindi ho alloggiato a EUR, una zona moderna ma non particolarmente interessante. Era anche costoso spostarsi da questa zona, con un costo di 50 euro per raggiungere il centro e 100 euro per arrivare all’aeroporto, quando mi era costato solo 60 euro dal centro all’aeroporto.

Ristoranti e Truffe a Roma

Attenzione ai sovrapprezzi nei ristoranti. Sono stata in una pizzeria vicino all’hotel dove il prezzo indicato per una pizza era 10 euro, ma mi hanno addebitato 12 euro. Anche gli spritz possono costare di più nei piccoli caffè, con un servizio aggiuntivo di 3 euro. Ho avuto una brutta esperienza con un cappuccino che doveva costare 3,50 euro ma mi hanno addebitato 5 euro perché il cameriere ha aggiunto una mancia di 1,50 euro senza farmelo sapere.

Consigli Utili a Roma

Quando arrivi a Roma, prendi un tour in autobus o in golf cart per orientarti. Gli scalini di Spagna e la Fontana di Trevi sono vicini, così come il Pantheon e il Vaticano. Acquista i biglietti per Colosseo e Vaticano in anticipo online. Molti americani arrivano presto a queste attrazioni a causa del jetlag. Non sederti sugli scalini di Spagna, anche se molti lo fanno, perché rischi una multa di 400 euro.

Se vuoi un’esperienza più autentica, ci sono molti piccoli caffè dove puoi goderti un pasto senza essere truffato. Ricorda che è consuetudine lasciare una mancia del 10-15% e alcuni posti aggiungono già il servizio al conto. Acquista l’acqua nei supermercati invece che negli hotel, dove costa molto di più.
