Are puffer jackets in style in 2021? Are puffer coats still in style? That is the question this winter 2021 into 2022 and we are here to give you the best stylish puffer jacket options even if you normally hate puffer jackets. We will also present you with the best stylish puffer coat options on the market.
While puffer jackets were never really out of style, they are certainly more in style this Fall/Winter 2021 to 2022 season. Shop our selection below which has been updated on November 29, 2022.
Puffer coats were quite popular in London last winter 2020 – 2021 while Londoners are more into quilted coats or thin puffer coats this winter 2021 – 2022. They also call these thin quilted coats grandma coats in the UK.
In New York, it’s common to see puffer coats on the street but it’s more about function and warmth than it is about trend. However, this winter 2021, we certainly do think puffer jackets and puffer coats will be trending, along with quilted jackets and quilted coats. We already see puffer jackets and puffer coats trending in high-street brands such as H&M and Zara. So, it’s best to snatch up your puffer jacket before they are sold out!
Are Puffer Coats Good for Winter?
Puffer coats that are made of goose down are warm and good for winter because they are made of the same materials that are found in goose down comforters and duvets. So, think of a down puffer coat or down puffer jacket as a blanket that you’ve made into a coat!
Other puffer coats that are made of synthetic fibers cost less than goose-down puffer coats because synthetic fibers are less expensive to source. The same goes for your duvet cover or comforter at home. Down comforters will cost more while synthetic comforters will cost less.
Why Are Puffer Coats Popular?
Puffer coats are popular because they are warm. However, as personal stylists, we can’t say that they are really stylish until recently! Historically puffer coats can add visual weight to your body, making you feel fat and puffy. They aren’t known for being fashionable or stylish. They are worn for function and utility.
If we’re honest, we do prefer lightweight puffers over general puffer coats. They tend to be more flattering on the body. Quilted coats can be considered light weight puffer coats. Quilted coats are definitely a good alternative to puffer coats, and they are certainly in style this season. If you’re not spending more than 10 minutes outdoors in the winter, quilted coats will be fine. If you’re walking the streets of Manhattan, you will want a warmer puffer coat or a teddy coat.
Puffer Jackets Trending 2020
Why are puffer jackets trending in the 2020s? We think the obvious reason is that people want to sit outdoors in the winter during the pandemic when they go to a restaurant. It can get quite cold outside in the winter, so a puffer coat or puffer jackets are good options to purchase as your winter coat for the season.
Here are some puffer jacket options that will keep you warm yet looking chic. Feel free to shop the images below.

Here’s our advice as online personal shoppers with regards to the following puffer coats That we curated.
We’re giving you this advice based on the style and visual impact of the coat. We are not taking into consideration any reviews that people have left with regards to the item. We leave those details up to you.
The Stand coat for $595 is a vegan leather puffer coat and the reason why we chose it is because of its fabrication. To see a puffer coat in leather and then in camel is really unique. So, if you prefer wearing camel over black this is a good option for you if you’re the type of person who likes to make a statement with their coats.
The Rag and Bone sand puffer coat is one of our favorites just because of the fabrication of the coat or the way it’s quilted. The rounded diamond shape quilt looks stylish. Plus, it doesn’t look too bulky and it seems like you could put a relatively thick sweater underneath it. Moreover, winter white is really in style again this season so this color coat would look really good with hues of winter white, beige, tan, camel, and brown. The coat seems to be knee-length as well. So, if you’re more petit this could become a longer coat for you and an option to consider if that’s what you’re looking for.
The Peserico coat for $389.99 as well as the Lauren by Ralph Lauren coat for $289.90 are both coats that seem to have a nice shape to them. The Peserico coat seems to have an A-line shape although it doesn’t look too puffy on the model. While the Lauren by Ralph Lauren has a belt. Therefore, belting the coat will give you an hourglass shape while wearing a puffer coat if you don’t want to look so puffy. Just visually looking at the picture without actually seeing the garments, the Perserico coat looks like it’s a thinner puffer coat than the Lauren by Ralph Lauren. So, if you’re looking for that winter white coat with some thickness and warmth, you may like the Lauren by Ralph Lauren for $289.90.
The Herno bronze puffer jacket for $820 is super adorable if you like that apres-ski look. It has a belt so it’s going to give you some shape. It doesn’t look overly puffy in its construction. And the fur collar just gives you that extra touch of luxury. So, if that’s what you’re looking for, that’s what it seems like you’ll get with his coat. Personally, I like metallic coats because they go with everything just like a neutral color. However, this bronze color is more for a person who likes to stand out. So, if you’d like to wear a statement, luxurious puffer coat, this is the one for you.
Moving onto our black selection of puffer coats. We have a wide variety for you in various shapes and price points.
First, we selected a classic North Face puffer coat for $300. The shape of the coat is relatively A-line which means it’s good for triangular-shaped bodies or anyone who wants to project a triangular shape – at least that’s what it looks like from the picture. North Face is typically known for its outdoor wear. However, it’s becoming more stylish as they have collaborated with Gucci in 2020 on some of their products.
We selected the Soia & Kyo puffer coat for its asymmetric design and unique detailing at the collar. So, if you’re more of an edgy person this would be the puffer coat for you.
The Theory black puffer coat for $695 is a good option as a classic. Theory, as a brand, generally has classic styles of their clothing silhouettes. Therefore, if you’re looking for a classic puffer coat this looks sophisticated yet functional. We like that it has a drawstring waist. Therefore, giving you some shape and hopefully reducing the visual effect of the puff.
The Nicole Benisti coat for $1200 just has a stylish puffer jacket look to it. The way it is styled with a black turtleneck, leather pants, and leather shoes just makes it look ultra-sophisticated yet still functional and on-trend. For the price, you really have to love it to invest in it.
Let’s move on to Moncler options. Moncler is a high-end brand and it is reflected in the pricing of the coats featured here. The first selection of Moncler coats happens to be shinier and give a paten leather effect. The one for $1600 doesn’t seem like it’s overly puffy. It looks like it has a sophisticated style to it yet still serves as a functionally warm puffer coat. If you want a more sophisticated and avant-garde look, or you’re a little bit edgier in style, this is a nice coat option for you. If you want something slightly more luxurious and to cover your ears, the Moncler fur hoodie coat for $2480 is the option for you. We like how the coat has a Chevron V puffer pattern detail, therefore giving a visually slimming effect versus the horizontal lines of the other puffer coat.
We included this Herno knee-length puffer coat for $640 because of its price point, versatility, and simplicity. If you like something more classic and functional this is a good option for you. It’s an investment but not quite as big of an investment as the Moncler coats knee-length coats that we just discussed.
The next two Moncler puffer coats are full-length puffer coats. If we had to choose between the two, we would probably go for the one for $1795 because of the way the puffer coat pattern is constructed. The square shapes plus the hourglass steam lines will give you more of a slimming visual effect – reducing the puffiness of the puffer coat. While the Moncler for $1600 with the horizontal details seems to go in at the waist, also giving you an hourglass effect, we hesitate with this coat because of its horizontal puffer coat details. These are some things that you need to consider for yourself as you know your body type and we’re just giving you general advice on the blog. For the price obviously, it’s good to try it on and compare. So, when it comes to those two coats it’s really your own personal preference based on our general advice here.
And our last option is the COS puffer coat for $285. Given the price point, this is one of our favorites for trending puffer coats in 2021. The horizontal detailing is not so pronounced. Plus, the spacing in between the horizontal detailing doesn’t leave a strong demarcation of a horizontal visual effect. Therefore, it diminishes the effect of visually looking puffier or shorter. From the picture, it looks like the fabrication of the puffer is not that puffy. So, we would categorize this perhaps as a lightweight puffer coat that has a slight A-line detail. So, it seems this coat is good for all body shapes. If you’re petite, it may be a little bit too long and voluminous for you.
We also added some black belted puffer coats and black belted puffer jackets to our selection above that are currently available for purchase this season.
Here are some quilted jackets and quilted coats, or light weight puffer jackets and coats, that we think are stylish and functional.
