Jennifer Lawrence’s Style: Should You Follow Her “Big Goes With Big” Fashion Rule?

Jennifer Lawrence’s style off-duty has become one of the most searched celebrity fashion aesthetics online. From oversized blazers and wide-leg trousers to baggy jeans, oversized sweatshirts, and chunky sneakers, her relaxed Manhattan wardrobe has inspired countless women to embrace the “big goes with big” trend.

But as a professional personal stylist, I don’t recommend treating celebrity street style as a styling formula.

Fashion trends and flattering style are not the same thing.

While Jennifer Lawrence’s wardrobe is undoubtedly trending, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the most flattering approach for the average woman.

Do I Recommend Jennifer Lawrence’s “Big Goes With Big” Styling Rule?

No.

Jennifer Lawrence’s oversized aesthetic works because it reflects the current fashion cycle, not because it’s universally flattering.

She’s tall, naturally slim, and her personal style embraces an intentionally oversized, relaxed silhouette. Most women have different proportions, different lifestyles, and different styling goals.

Simply copying a celebrity’s outfit without considering your own body proportions often produces disappointing results.

“One of the biggest mistakes women make is assuming that because a celebrity is wearing something, it must automatically be flattering. Fashion trends and good styling are two completely different things.”

Jennifer Lawrence’s Style: Why “Big Goes With Big” Doesn’t Work for Most Women

Oversized clothing has become one of fashion’s biggest trends over the past several years.

However, wearing oversized clothing from head to toe frequently creates one large silhouette rather than enhancing the body’s natural lines.

Instead of looking polished, the result can appear visually heavier and less intentional.

This is especially noticeable when combining:

  • Oversized blazer + barrel jeans
  • Oversized blazer + oversized denim
  • Oversized sweatshirt + barrel jeans
  • Oversized sweatshirt + chunky sneakers

These combinations continue adding visual volume without introducing enough structure.

For many women, the outfit simply looks oversized rather than stylish.

Not All Wide-Leg Pants Are the Same

This doesn’t mean every relaxed silhouette should be avoided.

For example, I’ve previously written about what I call the Zara Death Trousers—extra-long, fluid wide-leg trousers that became popular because of their dramatic drape.

Although they’re oversized, they behave very differently from rigid barrel jeans or oversized denim.

Soft fabrics create movement.

Rigid denim creates bulk.

Understanding the difference is one of the reasons professional styling goes far beyond simply following trends.

Regarding Jennifer Lawrence’s Style: Can Oversized Clothing Ever Work?

Absolutely.

Oversized clothing isn’t the problem.

Wearing oversized clothing without considering proportion, fabric, structure, and overall silhouette is.

For example, an oversized blazer can work beautifully when:

  • The shoulders still fit correctly.
  • The blazer has some structure rather than collapsing around the body.
  • The fabric maintains a clean shape.
  • The garments underneath don’t compete with the blazer’s volume.

Oversized pieces should look intentionally selected—not as though the garment is simply too large.

Regarding Jennifer Lawrence’s Style: Does Body Shape Matter?

Absolutely.

  • One styling formula will never suit every woman.
  • Petite women often become visually overwhelmed by excessive volume.
  • Women with fuller figures can unintentionally add width by wearing oversized garments from head to toe.
  • Even tall women benefit from considering fabric, proportion, and silhouette instead of assuming every oversized trend is flattering simply because it’s popular.

Professional styling should always begin with the individual—not with social media or celebrity fashion.

Jennifer Lawrence’s wardrobe reflects a much broader fashion movement.

  • Relaxed tailoring.
  • Oversized denim.
  • Chunky footwear.
  • Minimal effort dressing.

These aesthetics have become increasingly popular because they communicate comfort and an effortless lifestyle.

However, effortless should never be confused with polished.

As I discussed in my article on the Crypto Bro Style aesthetic, oversized casual dressing has become part of a wider cultural shift toward relaxed fashion. While it may be on trend, it doesn’t automatically communicate refinement, sophistication, or intentional style.

The same principle applies to womenswear.

Why Is Jennifer Lawrence’s Style So Heavily Promoted?

Jennifer Lawrence is a popular, relevant actress in her mid-thirties, which places her in the ideal position to influence women who want to emulate her appearance and lifestyle. As a result, fashion publications regularly feature her Manhattan street style—even when the outfits themselves are not particularly flattering or polished.

Celebrity fashion coverage is also commercial. Publications frequently use celebrity outfits to generate interest in shoppable alternatives and affiliate links. In other words, an outfit may receive extensive coverage because Jennifer Lawrence wore it and readers are likely to click—not necessarily because fashion editors genuinely consider it an exceptional example of personal style.

“Popularity and good style are not the same thing. Sometimes an outfit is being promoted because the celebrity is trending and the clothing can be sold—not because the outfit actually looks good.”
— Michelle T. Sterling

Pro Styling Tips

The oversized trend also gives younger women, particularly Gen Z, an easy justification for appearing less put together. Oversized sweatshirts, barrel jeans, loose jackets, and chunky sneakers may be current, but wearing several shapeless pieces together does not automatically create personal style. In many cases, it simply looks as though very little thought went into getting dressed.

My Professional Opinion About Jennifer Lawrence’s Style

  • I don’t believe Jennifer Lawrence’s street style should be treated as the gold standard for how women should dress. Jennifer Lawrence’s style is trending because she is popular, not because the outfits are flattering. The constant praise surrounding her oversized wardrobe gives Gen Z another excuse to dress in shapeless, baggy clothing and call it style. I don’t agree with that approach. Looking current is not the same as looking put together, and wearing loose clothing from head to toe does not suddenly become good styling because a celebrity does it.

It’s trending. That doesn’t mean it’s flattering.

As a personal stylist, my goal isn’t to help women copy celebrities.

My goal is to help women understand why certain silhouettes enhance their appearance while others simply follow fashion cycles.

“Not everyone wants to look polished, but most people do want to look put together. The problem is that someone without a trained understanding of style may define “put together” as simply wearing whatever is currently trending. An oversized sweatshirt, barrel jeans, and chunky sneakers may be popular, but popularity does not automatically make the outfit flattering, intentional, or well styled. And I do own a pair of white H&M barrel jeans, however I can’t wear them with an oversized top! I will just look oversized! A trend should never replace good styling principles. The best-dressed women aren’t necessarily wearing the newest trend—they’re wearing the silhouettes that flatter them most.”

— Michelle T. Sterling

If your goal is to build a wardrobe that feels polished, timeless, and flattering, I recommend learning styling principles first with an Essential Style Consultation and following trends second.

If you’re inspired by celebrity fashion but aren’t sure how to adapt trends to your own body shape, lifestyle, or profession, working with a professional personal stylist can save you years of expensive wardrobe mistakes. During a personalized styling consultation, you’ll learn which silhouettes, colors, and proportions are most flattering for your individual features rather than simply copying celebrity outfits.

These outfits are actually more elevated than what she wears. Go in this direction if you want to wear big with big. These outfit inspos are more structured and look more put together then some of her street style looks on the Internet.

What I’d Recommend Instead of Jennifer Lawrence’s Style

If you like Jennifer Lawrence’s relaxed aesthetic but want to look more stylish and put together, here’s the outfit I’d recommend instead.

Rather than wearing an oversized sweatshirt with oversized jeans, create shape with a fitted foundation piece and let the barrel jeans become the statement.

✔️ A fitted ribbed tank with a built-in bra – A streamlined top creates definition through the upper body while remaining comfortable enough for everyday wear.

✔️ Ankle-length barrel jeans – I own a pair myself, but I style them differently. Keeping the top fitted allows the barrel silhouette to become the focal point without making the entire outfit appear oversized.

✔️ Fishnet ballet flats – Instead of the Nike ballerina sneaker trend, while some women resort to the equally polarizing flip-flop heel trend, neither option provides the polished structure of a classic flat. I prefer these fishnet Mary Jane flats. They’re feminine, lightweight, and comfortable enough to walk thousands of steps while looking considerably more refined.

✔️ Oversized aviator sunglasses – Finish the outfit with oversized aviators for an effortless, fashion-forward finish.

Actually, this is Margot Robbie’s style!

The result?

A look that’s still current without relying on oversized clothing from head to toe.

You’ll still look on trend—but you’ll also look intentional, stylish, and put together. And according to Vogue UK, it’s giving London Cool Girl vibes!
