For example if Queen Elizabeth II abdicated the throne and gave it to Prince Charles, she would have become Queen Mother or Queen Dowager who once had constitutional authority. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will become the next queen consort as Prince Charles becomes king. She will be referred to as Queen Camilla.
A queen consort is a female royal who is married to a reigning king. As the king’s wife, her job is to support him in any way she can. This includes opening hospitals, cutting ribbons, planting trees, and unveiling official plaques. Unlike a queen regnant, she will never get involved in politics.
There have only been six reigning queens in British history since 1066, so it is unlikely that Camilla will ever become the monarch as that is only reserved for members of the royal family who are born in the direct line of succession.

Queen Consort v’s Princess Consort
Camilla, 75, is the Duchess of Cornwall, and she will become Queen Consort since Prince Charles is now King Charles III. Kate Middleton is not currently in line to be Queen Consort; however, that could change if Prince William were to become King after his father. In that case, Kate would become Queen Consort and Camilla would be relegated to the title of Princess Consort.
Is There a King Consort?
There is no such thing as King Consort as kings are meant to be only King. If a prince is married to a princess who becomes the Queen regnant, his title will be Prince Consort unless the monarch queen decides to give her husband a different title. This is the case for Queen Elizabeth II’s late husband, Prince Phillip. He was born Prince of Greece and Denmark and renounced his royal titles when he married Princess Elizabeth (now known as Queen Elizabeth II). However, in 1957 the queen made him an official Prince of the United Kingdom.
