So, what is the difference between Queen and Queen Consort? The main difference is that a queen consort does not have any constitutional authority, whereas a queen dowager or queen mother did if they were once the reigning monarch then became the queen mother of the successive reigning monarch. For example if Queen Elizabeth II abdicated the throne and gave it to Prince Charles, she would have become Queen Mother or Queen Dowager who once had constitutional authority. Queen Consort v’s Princess Consort
